HISTORY OF SAN MIGUEL BEER
WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF SAN MIGUEL BEER?
The origin of San Miguel tell us of a birth marked by the brewery restlessness of the founders, of Spanish origin, who decided to settle in Manila in 1890. After travelling halfway around the world as merchants and explorers, they set out to bring beer to Asia, beer which was already beginning to catch on with Europeans. To brew it there, they explored their surroundings to find the best ingredients and create the first beer in Southeast Asia.
Once established, restlessness led San Miguel to share its flavour throughout Asia, trying to adapt to the tastes of each region.
That same brewing interest led San Miguel to reach Spain in 1957, a true revolution in the world of beer. Driven by brewing restlessness and in search of quality with the best ingredients, San Miguel opted to create the first Especial beer (at that time Spain was a country where beer was of inconsistent quality and taste).
Having already settled in Spain, San Miguel’s restlessness, as it happened in Asia, encouraged it to spread throughout Europe and Africa; always with the aim of sharing and enjoying the quality and flavour of its beer.

IS THE SAN MIGUEL BOTTLE THE SAME ALL OVER THE WORLD?
The San Miguel bottle marketed in Europe and North Africa belongs to Cervezas San Miguel, and is therefore the same in this region. However, in the rest of the world, you can find another beer with the same name, which, however, does not belong to Mahou San Miguel.
BREWING AND INGREDIENTS OF OUR BEERS
HOW IS THE BEER BREWED?
It all starts with grinding and mashing. The cereal is ground and mixed with water, the mixture is then heated at different temperatures to obtain a wort which is rich in sugars, proteins, amino acids, mineral salts and other elements that will feed the yeast and influence the characteristics of the final product.
Once the wort has been filtered, it is boiled for a while. This process contributes to its clearing and sterilises it, and is the moment when the hops are added, on which the bitterness and, to a large extent, the aroma of our beer will depend.
This is when one of the most important stages of the process is reached: fermentation. At this point, the yeast converts the sugars in the wort into alcohol and carbon dioxide, and its metabolic processes generate aromatic compounds that will shape the organoleptic profile of the final beer.
Once fermentation is complete, maturation or cellaring begins, which consists of keeping the beer cold for a period of time to allow the aromas to finish evolving and the beer to be complete. The final liquid, in some cases, is filtered to obtain a completely clear beer, which we call “brite”.
Finally, it will be packaged in the chosen form and ready to be delivered to the consumer, who will be responsible for enjoying it.
